Sin embargo, muchas veces, decir la verdad y opinar libremente, puede ser convertirlo en una profesión de riesgo, cuando los asesorados no escuchan lo que quieren oír.
En clave de humor, pero no tanto, Bioy Casares nos cuenta la creíble anécdota de un constitucionalista.

LA REPÚBLICA DE LOS MONOS (Adolfo Bioy Casares)
Cuando me enteré de que había llegado a Buenos Aires el doctor Crescenzo, reputado constitucionalista de Tres Arroyos, fui a visitarlo.
Me encontré con un viejo flaco, muy tembloroso, tostado por el sol.
Venía del corazón del África, donde pasó una larga temporada junto a monos de esa raza tan comentada últimamente, en algunas publicaciones, porque habría desarrollado aptitudes poco menos que humanas.
Como amigo de los animales y viejo lector de la obra de Benjamin Rabier, me interesaba lo que el doctor Crescenzo tuviera que decir acerca del intelecto de los monos. Desde luego corroboró cuanto yo había leído al respecto.
Los monos estaban informados por diarios, radios y televisión, de las nuevas corrientes de la opinión mundial y habían montado una República provista de los tres poderes. En sus conversaciones privadas, como en declaraciones públicas, se mostraban abiertos al cambio de ideas, contrarios al autoritarismo y, por regla general, a la violencia.
Pregunté a Crescenzo qué lo había impulsado a emprender una excursión más propia de un etnólogo, o de un etólogo, que de un constitucionalista.
—Quizá debí pensar en lo que usted ahora me dice —contestó—, pero fue por mi condición de constitucionalista que me invitaron.
—Una iniciativa que honra a los monos— puntualicé.
—Prefiero pensar que me honra y que honra a Tres Arroyos. Los monos me llamaron para que diera un diagnóstico. Estaban empeñados en averiguar por qué al amparo de instituciones tan sabiamente planeadas (son un calco de las nuestras), cayeron en la decadencia y en la miseria.
La situación, por lo insólita, me pareció estimulante. Me aboqué a su estudio. Después de año y medio de trabajo dilucidé el enigma… y tuve que huir, en plena noche, para que los monos no me mataran.
—¿En qué quedamos? —pregunté—. ¿No dijo usted que los monos eran enemigos de la violencia?
Y el constitucionalista contestó:
—Lo son. De modo general lo son. Pero viera usted cómo se ofendieron cuando traté de explicarles que habían fracasado porque son monos…
